National Front

The National Front was founded in 1967 through a merger of extreme right-wing groups. In the early 1970s the party gained prominence with its overtly racist attitude to large-scale coloured immigration from the New Commonwealth. In this period it attracted new members from the right-wing Conservative Monday Club faction, and enjoyed its greatest electoral successes. The National Front made strident appeals to British nationalism and captured the Union Jack as its symbol. The party’s popularity faded with the right-wing programme of the Thatcher governments, as well as damaging splits in the 1980s. National Front membership and influence is now minimal, save in a few inner city areas.
